Where the 15-rated original had moments of real, visceral brutality - including one scene intriguingly dubbed "crunchy" by the BBFC - there's a weird effort made here to pull off the same trick with much blunter tools. This is a sequel without a single original idea in its head, half-heartedly aping the same exploitation movie clichés as 2008's Taken with no real bite or brawn thanks to a muzzling 12A rating. It's no coincidence that the soundtrack for Taken 2 includes not one, but two key tracks from Nicolas Winding Refn's stylish, ferocious thriller Drive.
